Tutorial Series: Single Crochet in Front Loop (SCFL)

Another variation of single crochet is the single crochet in front loop (SCFL). The stitch pattern gives a changed texture to a garment. This stitch pattern looks quite different from SCBL (Tutorial Series: Single Crochet in Back Loop).

The Suddenly It’s Summer Dishcloth Pattern is in single crochet in the front loop (SCFL). This stitch pattern can also be used for blankets, garments etc.

Suddenly It’s Summer Dishcloth

After the foundation row for a single crochet has been worked (Tutorial Series: How to Single Crochet), all the following rows are worked only into the front loop. This gives the fabric a distinct textured pattern on both sides of the work. The video and written instructions provided below show how to make a single crochet in the front loop holding the crochet hook in your right hand.

How to Single Crochet in Front Loop (SCFL):

Written Instructions on How to Single Crochet in Front Loop (SCFL):

  1. After working single crochet in the last stitch of the foundation chain row (Tutorial Series: How to Single Crochet), chain one and turn
  2. Skip the first stitch from the hook, and insert crochet hook in the front loop of the next stitch
  3. Catch and pull yarn loop under and through the front loop of the stitch
  4. There are two loops on the crochet hook now
  5. Yarn over (wrap the working yarn around the hook counterclockwise)
  6. Catch and pull yarn through the remaining two loops on the hook.
  7. There is one loop left on the crochet hook
  8. Repeat Steps 2 to 7 till end of the row and all other subsequent rows (chain one after working the last stitch end of each row and turn to the next row)

To Crochet a Cardigan

Last month I completed my very first crochet cardigan. It is based on the free crochet pattern called In the Clouds Cardigan by Grace of For The Frills. The cardigan is beginner friendly and the pattern comes along with a video tutorial on how to crochet this cardigan. The video tutorial for this cardigan was very helpful.

I picked this cardigan because it had a similar crochet moss stitch pattern (single crochet, chain one) yet where the single crochet was placed gave a different texture to the crocheted item. This textured crochet stitch pattern was also my inspiration to design and crochet the Four Sections Blanket pattern.

Briefly, the body of the free cardigan pattern is worked sideways (lengthwise) beginning from the first front panel, then the back, and ending with the second front panel leaving gaps for the armholes. The shoulders are seamed. The sleeves are crocheted flat and then seamed to the armhole edges. The ribbing for the body, sleeves, pockets, and neckband are crocheted separately using smaller crochet hooks and then seamed to the cardigan.

My cardigan looks quite different from In the Clouds Cardigan. Although I used the sideway technique and the same stitch pattern, I made several modifications to the cardigan. The cardigan I crocheted is not oversized nor does it have any pockets. Worsted weight yarn that I had purchased some years ago was used instead of the bulky weight yarn recommended in the pattern. My gauge was different and so were the crochet hooks that I used.

The biggest modification was in the sleeves of the cardigan and the neckband ribbing. Since I didn’t have enough yarn left to crochet long length sleeves, I decided to pick up stitches along the armhole edges with a knitting needle and purled both sleeves (pictured below) ending with a repetition of [Knit 1 through the back loop, purl 1] for the ribbing of the sleeves. For the neckband ribbing, I crocheted several rows of the moss stitch pattern all along one front, the neck and down the other front.

There are two main lessons I learnt from crocheting this beginner friendly cardigan pattern. One is that you need more yarn for a crochet cardigan than for knitted cardigan, and the other is that crocheting a cardigan takes less time than knitting one.

I am satisfied with how the cardigan turned out. Since the time to crochet a cardigan is much shorter than knitting one, I will definitely be crocheting more sweaters. There are several free crochet patterns available on For The Frills website that are quite lovely and beginner friendly. Some patterns also have video tutorials. I can’t wait to crochet another cardigan or a pullover using these free patterns by Grace.

Suddenly It’s Summer Dishcloth Pattern

Hello folks, it’s been quite a hot summer this past week, hasn’t it? Thankfully, we’re getting past the heatwave of last week. Usually when the weather is this hot, a cotton dishcloth is all I want to make. After two years of writing some knitting patterns on this blog it’s time to try writing a crochet pattern. A big thanks to all the readers of this blog for the comments and feedback on my knitting patterns.

Suddenly It’s Summer Dishcloth pattern is a variation of the single crochet stitch pattern. I learnt crochet watching the video series “Crochet for Knitters” by Stacy of verypink.com. Since then. I’ve discovered other crochet video tutorials on YouTube and several different crochet stitch patterns.

Yarn: Any cotton worsted weight yarn. I made one dishcloth with Peaches & Crème yarn in the Panorama colorway and the other dishcloth and Premier Home Cotton® Cone yarn in Jelly Dots colorway.
For the Crochet Moss Stitch border Lily Sugar’n Cream yarn in Country Red colorway.
Tapestry needle to weave in ends
Gauge: Not needed (I had about 5 stitches per inch)
Crochet hook: US size 7 or 4.50 mm crochet hook
Abbreviations:
RS: right side
WS: wrong side
sc: single crochet
[…]: pattern repeat

The single crochet variation (pictured below) inserts the crochet hook only under the front facing strand of the v shaped stitch.

Row 2 (WS): Single crochet using the single crochet stitch variation to end of the row, chain 1, turn

Repeat Row 2 till preferred length reached and bind off on the right side row. For Suddenly it’s Summer Dishcloth, the length is 7 to 7.5 inches (14 ridges/lines). Dishcloth width is a little more than 7 inches after blocking.

Crochet Moss Stitch Border (in the round):

With any contrasting color yarn and starting at the bind off edge of the dishcloth, 1 sc in the corner stitch, chain 2, 1 sc again on the same corner stitch and chain 1.

[Skip a stitch, then sc in the next stitch, chain 1]. Repeat […] till the next corner stitch.

[sc at the corner stitch, chain 2, sc again on the same corner stitch, chain 1, skip a stitch and sc on the next stitch, chain 1]. Repeat […] 2 more times till the beginning of the round.

Slip stitch into the first crochet moss stitch and chain 15 for the hanging loop. Slip stitch into the second crochet moss stitch, break yarn and pull yarn through.
